It happened on a dark and rainy night. John and his sister Marie were on their way home from a family reunion, when all of a sudden, they got a flat tire. John was driving, and he could feel the thumping of the flat tire against the road as he drove. Well, John had no choice but to pull over. They couldn’t go far with a flat tire before it would begin to ruin the wheel. John couldn’t see very well with all of the rain, but he stopped on the side of the road just below a street light. At least they wouldn’t be in total darkness while they figured out what to do.
Ordinarily, a flat tire would be no big deal. Changing a tire was a piece of cake. John had done it a hundred times. Unfortunately, his spare tire was not in his trunk, so he and Marie would have to call Triple A to come out and help them. John made the call on his cell phone, and the woman on the other end of the line said they should expect a tow truck within an hour. That was a long time, but waiting an hour wouldn’t be the end of the world, he supposed.
Marie hated the thought of stopping the car at night in the rain. She wasn’t very happy about the possibility of having to wait an hour for a tow truck, either. She had always watched too many scary movies and was now imagining all sorts of horrible things that might happen. She didn’t want John to know she was scared, so she sat quietly and hoped for the best.
As luck would have it, the tow truck arrived on the scene in ten minutes. The tire was changed in no time, and John and Marie were on their way home. Marie was embarrassed for being such a worry wart, and swore she would never watch a scary movie again.
